I am trying to determine if a certain integral is 0 or not, but I don’t understand how to do it because the integral is defined by a contour.
The integral is $\int_0^\infty \frac{\arctan(x)}{x^2 + 1}dx$.
The general procedure of finding the contour would be to find the partial fractions of the original function, then use Cauchy’s theorem on the new contour (which I would construct), and then use the Cauchy Residue Theorem to evaluate the integral.
The contour that I would use is $C_R(0,i)$, because $i$ is the only singular point of the function.
From there I would divide the integral into two pieces:
