Let $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ where $X$ is a subset of a metric space $(M,d)$. I’m trying to prove that:
$$\mathrm{max}{f(x)+f(y)} \le \mathrm{max}{f(x),f(y)}$$
I’ve been trying to use the triangle inequality.
I’ve tried doing this:
$$\mathrm{max}{f(x)+f(y)} = \mathrm{max}{f(x)+d(x,y),f(y)+d(x,y)}$$
$$\le \mathrm{max}{f(x)+d(x,y),f(x)+d(x,y),f(y)+d(x,y)} =\mathrm{max}{f(x),f(y)}$$
But it doesn’t look convincing to me.

This is not true in general. Take $f : \mathbb R \to \mathbb R$ to be $f(x) = d(x,0)$. Then $f(x)+f(y) = d(x,y)$ and
